One of Zambia’s most remote, authentic safari camps, Mwaleshi is genuinely special. The location in the pristine North Luangwa National Park is tangibly wild, realistically only accessible by light aircraft, roughly 10km from the confluence of the Luangwa and the Mwaleshi rivers. Here you will not see any people other than your fellow guests and staff at the camp, but the wildlife is impressive, particularly the interaction of lion and buffalo, plus the large herds of Cookson’s wildebeest. Expeditions on foot with some of Africa’s best walking guides are the speciality, often getting thrillingly close to these herds and prides of big game. There are also limited game driving opportunities, including a long excursion out to the unspoiled Mwaleshi Falls, but it’s really all about Southern Africa’s most exceptional walking safaris.

Around camp the ambience is rustic isolation, with just three simple reed and thatch chalets overlooking the Mwaleshi River. Each is solar powered with an open air en-suite bathroom and a sitting area in front of the chalets, one of which has a hammock. Evenings spent enjoying a drink round a campfire by the river, while listening to the nocturnal sounds of the bush, are an exquisite, timeless encapsulation of the unspoiled African wilderness.
