The Kafue’s vast, pristine tracts of wilderness are a keen birders paradise, with a diverse ornithological range to seek out, some of it virtually endemic to the region. Both of the camps on the Busanga Plains offer dedicated birdwatching drives of roughly three hours, where attention temporarily turns away from the mammals and reptiles as you head out with a skilled birding guide to look for some prized sightings.

As with other species, the wide open environs of the plains can make spotting easier, and you are almost guaranteed to experience some unique sightings. Kafue boasts over 490 identified bird species in total, from the diminutive, colourful rosy-throated longclaws to the much larger crowned cranes and endemics such as Chaplin’s barbet. The sheer range of favourable habitats for birdlife, especially woodland areas on the tree islands, means that you could see secretary birds, snake eagles, martial eagles, lesser jacanas and yellow billed storks, all on the same drive!
